Haste The Day vs. Haste The Day 6.29.2010

A Squared Industries has worked with the metalcore group Haste The Day for many years. Andy used to work for Kulture Entertainment, their management company, and A2 has booked and/or promoted many Haste The Day shows and still maintains good friendships with many of the band members.

Carmel, Indiana-born Haste The Day originally started out as a three-piece group in 2001 that featured founding members Brennan Chaulk, guitar/vocals, Devin Chaulk, drums/vocals, and Mike Murphy, bass/vocals. Six months after inception, the band added longtime friend Jason Barnes to the group as a second guitarist. Then in 2002, after a series of auditions, the band listed Jimmy Ryan as their lead vocalist. Haste The Day has since released one EP and now five full-length studio albums.

In late 2005, Jimmy Ryan announced his decision to leave Haste The Day. He played his last show with the band on December 30, 2005 in Indianapolis. Soon thereafter he got married and accepted a position at Tooth & Nail Records. The remaining members continued on for the European tour with The Juliana Theory, accompanied by Stephen Keech of the Denver-based band New Day Awakening. On February 23, 2006, Haste The Day stated in a press release that they had officially made Keech their new permanent singer. Haste The Day continued on with a new lead singer, but since has weathered more lineup changes: Jason Barnes was replaced as guitar player by Dave Krysl, and then not long after their fourth album both Chaulk brothers left the band to spend more time with their families and were replaced by Giuseppe Capolupo and Scotty Whelan. Mike Murphy continues to be the sole original member of the band after nine years.

On 6.29.2010 at Rhino's in Bloomington, Indiana, Haste The Day played live with every member past and present getting in on the action. Jimmy Ryan, Devin & Brennan Chaulk, and Jason Barnes joined Mike Murphy, Stephen Keech and all the 'new' Haste The Day band members Dave Krysl, Giuseppe Capolupo and Scotty Whelan for an incredible extra-long set of brand-new tracks off the new HTD studio album alongside classic tracks from the first 4 albums and 1 EP. A Squared On The Air on WITT 91.9FM: May 2010 update

So it is actually now a reality - holy WOW: A2 is hosting our own radio program!A Squared Industries brings you new music from Indy CD & Vinyl, live shows in concert, music from our DJ gigs, and now on the FM airwaves!

Our program will be every weekend: Saturdays at Noon and Sundays at 9pm.

The program will be carried on WITT 91.9 FM in the 9-county Indianapolis metro area, and then eventually streaming on our website and podcasts available for download.

Our good friend Eric Davis has jumped on board to produce the show! Now we KNOW it's good! We broadcast every weekend from his beautiful studio here in Indianapolis.

We couldn't be more excited about putting this together over the next year. If you have any suggestions please feel free to let us know; also, if you want to advertise on our program it will be quite reasonable and inexpensive to do so. Hit us back about that too!

JONSI of Sigur Ros new solo album listening party to be held before April's LET GO! at The Lockerbie

Tonight at The Lockerbie Pub is our monthly LET GO! at The Lockerbie dance party... a great place to leave your cares at the door and dance your pants off! This month our special guest DJs are John Larner and Slater Hogan of Muzique Boutique, and we will be kicking off the night by playing some tracks from the new Jónsi ablum and giving away tons of swag and prizes courtesy of Paste Magazine and XL Recordings!

Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson is the guitarist and vocalist for the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. He is universally known for his soft inimitable falsetto voice. He has also released an album as one half of Jónsi & Alex with his boyfriend Alex Somers, formerly of the band Parachutes. Jónsi’s solo album, Go, was released on April 5th 2010.

In his solo venture Jónsi departs from the ethereal, dreamy landscapes present in Sigur Rós’ music and instead concentrates on shorter, more instant ‘portrait’ tunes. It would still be foolish to place Jónsi in a specific genre, however; he again manages to create an isolated, unique sound which only he could do without being dubbed ‘cheesy’.

Birgisson grew up in Iceland, raised by parents who weren’t particularly musical; his early memories include playing The Beatles at double speed on his turntable and listening to and playing along with Iron Maiden records. You can hear him speak at length about his musical past and loves in an upcoming episode of All Songs Considered on NPR, in which Birgisson plays guest DJ. His history as Sigur Ros’ singer and guitarist spans 16 years, during which time the band has released five studio albums and coined a unique sound that has yet to be matched by any act since.

The wonderful world of Aaron Scamihorn

A Squared Industries has had the incredible honor of working with a new friend on a promotion and branding project for our WITT 91.9FM Kickoff Party concert this upcoming April 1st.

Aaron Scamihorn, artist and owner of RONLEWHORN.COM contacted us after designing the poster for the February NAPTOWN ROLLER GIRLS bout to offer his services (and friendship - we're definitely taking him out for good beers and big laughs real soon).

We *kind of* had a vision for our project: the two of us and a microphone... for a poster and flyer campaign. We know: not much to work with, right? It's a good thing Aaron is a champ with this stuff. He came in and first took a ton of photos with his Canon 40d camera, outfitted with a Canon 17-85is lens and Canon Speedlite 420ex flash:

Using these reference photos Aaron blew out the contrast. Then using a Wacom tablet hooked up to his Mac computer Aaron used Adobe Illustrator to make the lines and shapes of the illustration in different layers over the contrasted photograph he chose for the piece:

Moving into Adobe Photoshop Aaron perfected the coloring and textures. He came up with a few incredible variations before laying the type and creating this masterpiece:

Aaron also went to work on some needed tweaks to our logo:

Aaron is such an incredible talent, and one of the nicest people we have met in the Indianapolis scene as well. A Squared Industries has the honor of presenting GIRL TALK on March 27th at The Murat Egyptian Room!

Gregg Michael Gillis, better known by his stage name Girl Talk, is an American musician specializing in mashups and digital sampling. Gillis has released four LPs on the record label Illegal Art and EPs on 333 and 12 Apostles. Gillis began making music while a student at Chartiers Valley High School in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bridgeville. After a few collaborative efforts, he started the solo "Girl Talk" project. He continued making music under the Girl Talk alias while studying biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He produces mashup-style remixes, in which he uses often a dozen or more unauthorized samples from different songs to create a new song. The New York Times Magazine has called his music "a lawsuit waiting to happen,"a criticism that Gillis has attributed to mainstream media that want "to create controversy where it doesn't really exist," citing fair use as a legal backbone for his sampling practices.
He has given different explanations for the origin of his stage name, once saying that it alluded to a Jim Morrison poemand once saying that it alluded to an early Merzbow side project. Most recently, he attributed the name to a grunge band called TAD, based in Seattle.In a 2009 interview with FMLY, Gillis stated:

[T]he name Girl Talk is a reference to many things, products, magazines, books. It’s a pop culture phrase. The whole point of choosing the name early on was basically to just stir things up a little within the small scene I was operating from. I came from a more experimental background and there were some very overly serious, borderline academic type electronic musicians. I wanted to pick a name that they would be embarrassed to play with. You know Girl Talk sounded exactly the opposite of a man playing a laptop, so that’s what I chose.

Pitchfork's Ryan Dombal reported it this way: "Unlike mash-up makers in it to figure out the lamest way to combine two song titles, justify their existence with cheap mp3 blog Diggs, or wind up in a Cobrasnake shot with some Olsen twin look-a-like, Gillis just really likes stuffing tons of his favorite FM moments into bursts of Top 40 overload. "I'm a pop music enthusiast.""

Broad Ripple Brew Pub turns 20 in 2010!

This year the Broad Ripple Brewpub will be celebrating 20 years of serving great food, quality ales, and being the hub of an ever-growing community! The Brew Pub has a special place in our hearts; and, to a fault, we usually drag our friends and bands from out of town to the Pub when they come to Indy. Highly recommended if you haven't been there yet!

To begin the big year the right way, they are kicking it off with $3.00 pints on Mondays, as well as booking a limited-return engagement of their favorite magician Trinity every Wednesday in March. Those of you in the internets might remember Trinity, long ago he was a weekly staple at the Brew Pub, performing tableside magic tricks for the kids (and the whole fan-damnily).

The Brew Pub's actual birth date is in November, but they plan to keep rolling towards the big birthday party on 11.14.2010 with more specials and other surprises (like a commemorative series of brews from years past).

LOCAL LIFT-OFF at The Vogue on 2.5.2010

The great blizzard of 2010 didn't keep people from descending on The Vogue Theatre on Friday February 5th for an incredible night of locally-grown music on the big stage in Broad Ripple. While we definitley would have filled the place in better weather, 300 strong braved the worst road conditions possible for six hours worth of some of the best hip-hop, rap, trip-hop, dance, electro and indie-experimental music this fair city has to offer. Metromix definitely had it right when it declared that this show was the #1 event to attend this week: Metromix 2.4.2010

Right from the start patrons knew the night was for real: hip-hop act TWIN MONSTER devoured any negativity brought by the eight inches of fluffy snow piling outside with an incredibly tight, polished act featuring three rappers, keys and a DJ. The live set was remarkable for its expertly performed multi-vocal selections, not an easy task considering the lightning-quick timing the group has perfected. Hours of practice must have gone into creating their set, because not one hiccup was heard in a blistering 35-minute rap extravaganza. Up next was Indianapolis' newest breakout act JOOKABOX (formely known as Grampall Jookabox), the brainchild of David "Moose" Adamson who over the years has taken a one-man programming/performance art/multi-instrumental/strange-yet-uncontrollably-dancy freak show and molded it into a four-piece indie-dance juggernaut. Three full-length albums deep into a career that has taken him around the world, this Vogue event was put together to hail the release of a remix EP put together by the cats at Audio Recon and released by globally-reached but locally-based Asthmatic Kitty Records. This release (which is available for download on the AK website) was the centerpiece of the evening, as it pointed out just how incestuous Indiapolis' music community truly is, even across different genres (hell, just look at the Jookabox lineup - it would be four pages of a tree map and flow charts to show how many bands are connected through these four musicians). Specifically, JOOKABOX's EP was remixed by musicians aligned with Audio Recon, headed up by the drummer of the headlining band MAB LAB, and contains tracks played out at DJ events by yours truly, A SQUARED INDUSTRIES, and the openers TWIN MONSTER helped with the record and is staffed by artists repped by Audio Recon. Headlining the live portion of the show (not that the DJs weren't "live," but, well, you know...) was MAB LAB, pretty much Indy's only trip-hop act for the past 10 or 11 years. A powerhouse of incredible (and famous) musicians in their own right, together as MAB LAB the band is the consummate headlining act with mature, well-written, incredibly performed, and stylistically unique songs that have always made this group ahead of its time here in Naptown. We remember when they used to sell out The Patio (sigh) on Friday nights back in the day, and we couldn't have been more excited to be a part of putting on a big show for them and what they have each done for the music scene here in Indy. MAB LAB formed in early 1999 by vocalist/organist Kate Lamont and drummer Eric Brown, and were soon joined by MC/DJ/producer/artist Mike Graves. Brown was introduced to Graves through a mutal friend and top indianapolis drummer Devon Ashley. In 2000 they self-released their first album “Features and Controls” and followed that up with 2001’s "The Fadeback EP." Both of these homemade releases earned critical praise and were enough to garner them recognition from some serious industry folks, as they went on to work with producer Chris DeBenideto and bassist Jimmy “Jazz” Prescott (G Love and Special Sauce) as well as engineer/ producer Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle/Lucinda Williams) and producer Peter Collins (Rush/Indigo Girls/Queensryche). The ML crew has done notable work both musically and culturally in and around Indianpolis. Vocalist Kate Lamont released two albums with her progressive folk group Blueprintmusic and toured extensively. She has also been working on a new solo album with noted producer and musician Vess Ruthenberg (Queen Size Studio/The Pieces/Lemonheads) as well as serving as the director of operations of The Earth House. Mike Graves has been busy in the art and music worlds: in addition to creating new albums by Twilight Sentinels and People vs Radio he has had many successful showings of his art work from Indianapolis to Seattle. Eric Brown started Audio Recon in 2005, formed the glitch clique Post-Lab and released "Manifesto," then went on to release solo digital albums "Mind Film Vols. 1 and 2" in Dec 2007. He is currently working on a new glitch clique album as well as a host of other projects for Audio Recon. Ande Shaul was a integral part of the post-MAB LAB project New Year Revolution w/ Graves and Lamont, as well as playing bass for People vs Radio. He is currently writing material for an upcoming solo project as well as lending his many talents to various sessions around Indianapolis. These are important people who do important things - keep up with what they are doing folks and you will see just how we do it here in the Nap. And lastly, A SQUARED INDUSTRIES had the honor of DJing an incredible party after the bands with our buddy DJ ACTION JACKSON. If you aren't familiar with him, his parties in Indy and Bloomington have a reputation for being OUT OF CONTROL! Personally, we like him so much for being a good dude and good friend, and business-wise for showing how a motivated deejay can make a living through concentrating serious hustle. ACTION JACKSON keeps it real making a living by DJing locally most nights of every week. Kids, watch and learn. Here's some video of ACTION JACKSON for that night at The Vogue:

GIRLS ROCK Music Camp For Girls (Indianapolis Chapter)

A Squared is now fully behind local efforts of four ladies in town who run the Indianapolis Chapter of GIRLS ROCK, and we hope you find this as exciting as we do! GIRLS ROCK is a great charity that focuses on running summer camps for young women to find identity and self esteem in rock 'n roll music.

The mission statement of Girls Rock is "a Rock ’n’ Roll Camp for Girls, a 501(c)3 non-profit, builds girls self-esteem through music creation and performance. Providing workshops and technical training, we create leadership opportunities, cultivate a supportive community of peers and mentors, and encourage social change and the development of life skills."

A Squared is helping out with a few fundraising shows to get the ball rolling on the local chapter having enough funds to operate an Indianapolis camp this summer!

HOMESPUN: a great idea for a new store in Indy - HELP OUT!

Our friends Amanda and Neal Taflinger, the brains and brawn behind the bi-annual INDIEana Handicraft Exchange (where we at A Squared sponsor and deejay each time) are up for a grant to help make their handicraft store, Homespun, a reality.

It's a project they've been working on for a while, and they are planning to open by July 2010 in Irvington. The store will showcase the work of local, regional and national artists, provide a classroom for low-cost arts workshops for youth and adults, and offer a small gallery space for up-and-coming artists in the Midwest. This grant would get them a little closer to their goal and relieve some of the personal financial burden. However, the grants are awarded based solely on votes acquired, so they need YOUR help.

It won't be difficult or painful, we promise.... all we'd like you to do is click on the link below and vote for the Homespun project. Each voter is able to vote for the project once a day, every day from now through February 28. You can even set a simple notice on your iCal, or similar application, on your phone or computer to remind you to place your vote daily! We have been setting sales records at the bar, we've had to start moving tables and chairs out of the place beforehand so there is room for all the people, we ruin Wednesday mornings every damn month - it's just getting to be too much fun. There, we said it: TOO MUCH FUN!

Seriously. In order to spread the fun around like margarine on hot toast, we have begun inviting guest DeeJays each month to spin with us (professional or not) and it has been great! The most rewarding events have been with guest DJs who, well, don't know how to DJ...yet. Picking "tastemakers" and spending a month teaching them how to use the Tech 12's (then stealing their tracks, ha!) and watching them KILL IT in front of their friends has been awesome, to say the least.

The (Indianapolis) Local Music Git Down - thanks MOKB!

Back on Saturday, January 23rd the nice fellers from My Old Kentucky Blog put together a pretty amazing day of local music with help from Butler Scion, Nuvo, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and LaundroMatinee — along with the special efforts of the local music community including A Squared, Indy CD and Vinyl, Luna, Transpanther, Joyful Noise, IndyMojo, Musical Family Tree, Vibes, and more — appropriately titled the Local Music Git Down at Locals Only.

What will hopefully become a re-occurrence in the city, The Local Music Git Down was a celebration of the local scene with many bands and DJs featured.

Now, it could easily be assumed that when you get this many local bands and DJs together on one day for one big shimmy and shake show it might end up as a clusterfuck...the weeble may wobble but it won't fall down, right? Especially when our buddy Eric from Butler Scion loaned MOKB a Toyota Tundra in order to transport fifty 30-packs of free PBR for the bands to drink all day whut whuuuuuut?

We have the pleasure of telling you that the weeble didn't fall - on the contrary this Git Down might have been one of the best examples of how Indianapolis musicians, artists, promoters and fans continue to coalesce around the vibrant and ever-growing scene we have here in Naptown...and a big fat thank you is in order for Dodge and JB of MOKB for pointing this out once again, in an extremely macro manner.

In addition, a portion of the sponsor money and ticket sales was be donated to Rock For Riley. What a great group of people, right?

All the artists showed up as well, both literally and figuratively, almost like they were in a giant one-upper competition. We Are Hex, Burnt Ones, Pravada, Thunders, Slothpop, America Owns The Moon - not only are all these bands deserving of international acclaim in their own right but they all SLAYED on stage, each putting in performances of the year.

MOKB doubled their pleasure and doubled their fun, renting out the building next door to serve as a giant green room/play pen for the bands and setting up a mobile recording studio so that each band could record their own session for the MOKB-run Laundromatinee.com holy wow, looking forward to seeing those.

Conclusion: for one day this fair city was overflowing with live musical talent and extremely short on crabs in a barrel.

Now here is a band we had the pleasure of performing with at Art vs Art 2009 at The Vogue in Indianapolis, and we couldn't give a higher recommendation to you of a 'new' band to hear. Great live, great on record, and great people as well.

Bad Veins' bio: "Bad Veins are a rarity in today’s musical landscape: An act who didn’t set out to become critical darlings or the next 'buzz' band, but managed to achieve both after only playing a handful of shows. However, despite the fact that Bad Veins’ music has been instantly embraced since their inception in late 2006, the duo of Benjamin Davis and Sebastien Schultz decided not to rush out the disc you’re currently holding in your hand. The result is Bad Veins, an album that’s unique but familiar, and not only lives up to the hype but surpasses it. Looking back, it’s hard to believe it all started out a little over two years ago in a non-descript attic in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The group was originally conceived by Davis as a solo project, yet after Bad Veins’ first gig he quickly realized he would need a collaborator—which is where drummer Schultz entered the picture. 'I always loved watching Sebastien play in his old band because he is just such a dramatic drummer,' Davis reveals. 'We hooked up one day and I showed him all the stuff I’d been working on. I muted the electronic percussion and let him play on top, and after the first practice these songs were way cooler than I ever imagined they could be,' he continued.

Bad Veins’ second gig was opening for Snowden, who were so impressed with the duo they instantly began singing their praises to anyone and everyone – especially in NYC. In no time, the band was performing at a showcase for the popular Manhattan-based web site Gothamist yet this was only their third show. From there, the palpable buzz surrounding the act spiraled out of control, eventually leading to five-figure grants, product endorsements and a deal with Dangerbird Records.

The immediate amorous response to Bad Veins may be directly linked to their live shows, specifically their ability to accurately replicate their luscious songs with some help from a third member: Irene. The lovingly named antique reel-to-reel player handles 50 to 70 extra tracks, allowing the dynamic duo to create their huge orchestrations the way they were intended.

A year after this duo’s first show, they found themselves at CMJ touted as 'the breakout act of the event' on the Festival’s site – yet it was Davis who was taken most by surprise. Although they could have easily capitalized on the attention they were receiving, Davis and Schultz decided instead to work with the music licensing company Black Iris (who hired Davis as a freelance composer after hearing the first Bad Veins demos) and utilize the commercial company’s studios as well as expert engineers in Richmond, Virginia and Los Angeles, in order to fully realize this flawless collection of songs.

The finished album is as cerebral as it is visceral, and showcases what Bad Veins are capable of. 'I’m so glad that we waited and made this record on our own terms,' says Schultz. From the military drum introduction of 'Found' to the final rattle of 'Go Home,' Bad Veins is a cohesive collection of songs that sounds more like a labor of love than an attempt to move units. This is especially evident with the album’s breakthrough single 'Gold And Warm,' a track that unifies the best parts of the Killers and the Walkmen while retaining the band’s indie sensibility and landlocked Midwestern roots. Additionally, Bad Veins are also extremely proud that Dangerbird decided to release the album without changing a note, a fact that’s largely unprecedented but totally understandable.

That same attention to detail is applied to Bad Veins’ lyrics, which are rich in metaphor yet aren’t so ambiguous that you won’t understand what Davis is talking about. 'I think there’s a common thread on the album that stems out of my personality,' he explains. 'There are fears and insecurities involved in no matter what you do and I’m the kind of person who thinks about those things a lot – so they weed themselves into pretty much every song,' he continues. 'I typically write about something that I’ve experienced, so they always have this woven element of my own personal demons.'

There’s no clear genre or box to stash this band into and even Bad Veins themselves aren’t exactly sure where they fit in. But, they can’t wait to start performing live and find out. 'I think everyone from some indie kid in Ohio to a Williamsburg hipster can find something to latch onto with this record and enjoy it,' Schultz explains. 'I don’t feel badly because we don’t fit in anywhere,' he continues, admitting that even if it ended tomorrow, Bad Veins have already accomplished more than they ever imagined. 'If we can spend this next year on the road and see the world by playing the music we want to play, then we’ve already succeeded.'"

Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers live in Indy with Pravada and AOTM

Well, A Squared successfully pulled off another big show here in Indy this past Monday at Locals Only, this one featuring Brooklyn's own Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers with local support from two of Indianapolis' finest bands: Pravada and America Owns The Moon.

We first got turned on to Shilpa Ray by glowing recommendations from Nick Cave, and quickly learned why her live show was causing such a stir in the blogoshere - this little lady has some pipes, people, and her wails complemented her gypsy-like harmonium jamming during her set at the cozy corner we call LOAMP.

The press for this show was nothing short of spectacular, with rave previews coming in from Metromix: "Shilpa Ray makes her case for the stronger presence of harmonium in indie rock. Add that on to her cabaret-style vocals, engaging songs and commanding stage presence, and it’s easy to see why she’s making a name for herself. The band is touring behind debut album 'A Fish Hook An Open Eye,'” while earning Number 5 on their Top 10 Events for the week; and from NUVO: "Judging from a few songs, Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers are worth hearing — they play a dirty but sophisticated cabaret-punk that’s firmly rooted in jazz and blues, a little bit Joplin-esque without the indulgence of Joplin’s later years. But we’ll leave it to the Village Voice to tell us why the Shilpa and her band are worth seeing: 'She looks tiny and jovial (especially surrounded by her menacing, dudely band mates), but goddamn can she ever shriek, alternating jazzy, evocative moans (she's inspired Billie Holiday comparisons, and for once they don't sound totally ridiculous) with a nuclear-grade, paint-evaporating, continent-shifting howl loaded with more volume, rage, and pathos than the entire Ozzfest lineup combined.'" Not bad!

And we are happy to report that it stood up to the previews, the show was entertaining, engaging, and just what we all needed on a Monday night!

Also, here's a review of the local jams:
"The boys were back at it Monday night at Locals Only where the bands America Owns the Moon (AOTM) and Pravada played a show with Shilpa Ray. Christian Taylor of AOTM bounced all over the stage with his signature "knee drop to the floor" power blues solos that reminded me of what could happen if Chicago Blues were to have a one night stand with grunge. The group was tight, and there was great communication going on between all members on stage. Maybe someday I'll be close enough to see the faces melt off of Danny's custom Telecaster. The full set list for the night included: Truth About Us, Bottles and Cans, Prozac City, Blues Now Honey, A Needle and a Record, Death 2 Die, Lighted Melody, DEGA, Box of Bones, Freak Out!, and The Hard Way.

Pravada, which is arguably one of the best live rock and roll bands in Indianapolis right now, followed suit with a more melodic and subtle stage presence. There seemed to be a deeper, rooted connection between Jesse and the lyrics he sang, and after having heard their album Manus Piere, seeing them live absolutely blew me away. There was no wasted sound from what I could hear. Every note was mature and deliberate. My only qualm with their set was that Jesse's microphone needed to be turned up so I could hear him better. Full set list: Holding Han, Flatbush, Teacher, Junkie, Straight Molly, One Foo, You're Fun, and Someone Other Than... There was footage taken of their set, so keep an eye out around A2 Industries for the show to be posted online somewhere."

The 3rd home bout of the Naptown Roller Girls flat-track roller derby season (www.naptownrollergirls.com) was held on Saturday, January 16th 2010 at The Pepsi Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and we are proud to report everyone survived and walked away with a BIG WIN for the home team, it was something like 200 billion to twelve. Seriously, the Tornado Sirens kicked a lot of Kentucky arse in a major rout, keeping the visitors under 20 points for the bout and beating them by over 200 points! Like, whoah! You might think this kind of old fashioned passionate butt whipping would be boring to watch, but everyone involved kept things fresh - a tall order considering the bout was competing with our Indianapolis Colts and their first game of the NFL playoffs.

As always, music was provided by yours truly at A Squared Industries during the bout as well as the after party at Birdy's. This has been such an honor and thrill for us! Honestly, DJing this has been quite a learning experience, we're now realizing just how difficult it is to make everyone happy all the time with track selection and timing and such. Normally when we DJ it is for our own events, parties and concerts that people come specifically to see, hear, and dance. It is quite a challenge to become a piece of a larger puzzle, to complement the situation and not be the attraction; and this is quite a fun challenge. We're getting better and better as DJs because of this challenge and these girls are incredible to support!

If you haven't yet been to a bout you need to make like a computer and get with the program!

How do you play derby??? Glad you asked!

There are 3 positions on the track:
PIVOT: Sets the pace for the pack and is the last line of defense. She wears the helmet with a stripe.

BLOCKER: Tries to stop the jammer and makes life difficult for the opposing team's blockers

JAMMER: Tears through the pack and scores points by passing members of the opposing team. She wears the helmet with a star.

The pack begins with a pivot from each team in front, 3 blockers from each team in the middle, and a jammer from each team in the back. When the whistle blows, the pack takes off, and on a second whistle, the jammers blast off and fight their way through the pack in an attempt to become "lead jammer." The jammers lap the pack and when they re-enter the pack, they receive one point for each member of the opposing team they pass legally. A jam lasts a maximum of two minutes, but the "lead jammer" has the right to call off the jam at her discretion.

It might appear as though there are no rules on the track, but there are penalties such as:

• false starts
• skating and blocking out of bounds
• holding
• illegal blocking
• intentional tripping and falling
• illegal use of the hands

Add all that to general mayhem of skating extra close several other girls who want to knock you down and you'll feel the excitement. See you at the fairgrounds!

A Squared on the radio? A Squared on the RADIO!!!

So the two of us have confirmed with a local terrestrial FM radio station the idea of A2 hosting our own radio program! This actually is becoming a reality - so holy WOW: A Squared Industries bringing you new music from Indy CD & Vinyl, live shows in concert, music from our DJ gigs, and now on the air!

Our program will be on Fridays from 10pm to Midnight and Saturdays from 1pm to 3pm every week, beginning Friday March 19th.

The program will be carried on WITT 91.9 FM in the 9-county Indianapolis metro area, and then eventually streaming on our website and podcasts available for download.

Our good friend Eric Davis has also come on board to produce the show! Now we KNOW it's gonna be good!

We couldn't be more excited about putting this together over the next two months. If you have any suggestions please feel free to let us know; also, if you want to advertise on our program it will be quite reasonable and inexpensive to do so. Hit us back about that too!
